Missions

The UPC Refugee Resettlement Committee wants to share the following celebrations and accomplishments of the Thaw family (the Burmese refugees we are co-sponsoring) since their September arrival.
*All children enrolled in schools, making friends, learning English.
*Family and their friends enjoyed UPC church picnic at Camp New Hope.
*Family attended Chapel Hill-Carrboro Holiday Parade, especially enjoying fire trucks, floats with children in parade, Chick-fil-A cows, all horses and dogs.
*Part-time temporary jobs for the Thaw parents, who are now able to take the bus alone to go to and from work; many applications submitted for possible permanent full-time jobs.
*Everyone is trying out English eagerly, inviting us to "come in and sit down." ESL classes are going well.
*Family attended Harvest Feast by Lutheran Family Services November 30 and free Clothes Fair December 1 at Carolina Apartments.
*Independently, the family members are able to walk or ride bus to the PTA Thrift Shop, to take care of all their groceries and meals, and to take the J bus for English classes. They now have several Karen (their ethnic group) friends at their apartment complex and in the area who also help with English translation, school buses and groceries.
*Many necessary medical appointments have been accomplished or are scheduled. The family is in good health, receiving required vaccinations, screenings, and preventive care.
