Communion Preparation. Would you like to help at church but don't want a weekly commitment? Can you stack and un-stack little cups? The chancel Guild is looking for people to receive and re-set the communion trays following the traditional communion service at 11:00 a.m. on Communion Sundays. No dishwashing skills are necessary; supplies are disposable. Training is provided. Contact Laura Piver or Nancy Robinson.
Flower Committee. Do you enjoy arranging flowers? If so, the UPC Flower Committee invites you to join them. They provide arrangements for worship on Sundays when none are given as memorial gifts or in honor of weddings, etc. They also arrange the Christmas and Easter flowers that decorate the sanctuary, adding beauty at those special services. Work with the choirs -- help is needed with the Children's, Junior, and Youth Choirs providing snacks, robing, organizing music, and occasional transportation. Contact Beth Auman Visser [].
Habitat for Humanity. Be a part of the dream of home ownership. Join a work crew this spring. There are two shifts on Saturday -- 8:30 to noon or 12:30 to 4:30. There are also workdays on Wednesday and Friday. Volunteers must be 16 and over, with restricted activities for those under 18 (no power tools, no climbing on the roof), but no formal construction experience is needed. Carpooling is available. Providing lunch for the crew is another great way to participate, by yourself or partnering with someone else. Hispanic Ministry. If you have computer skills and some Spanish language fluency, please consider volunteering to teach basic computer classes to Hispanic adults in the computer lab at Northgate Presbyterian Church in Durham. Contact Julio Ramirez-Eve [], Pastor.

Community Outreach Program Opportunities
A Helping Hand. A Helping Hand provides services to older adults and younger adults who need assistance because of a temporary or permanent disability, accident or injury. Companion care, respite care, transportation, and meal preparation are some of the services provided. Volunteers may serve as respite “sitters”, help an elderly person with yard work or participate in special activities. Alamance-Orange County’s Prison Ministry. Volunteers are needed to supply personal needs for prisoners, as volunteer sponsors, in job development and to present music and worship services. For more information contact the chaplain at 919-732-9301.
Blue Ribbon Mentor Advocate. A support program for students in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro city schools providing mentoring, tutoring, advocacy, enrichment, leadership training and scholarships. Charles House. Daytime elder care for people cared for at home by their families. Provides therapeutic activities and socialization throughout the day. Dispute Settlement Center. A nonprofit mediation center whose mission is to promote and bring about the peaceful settlement of disputes and to prevent the escalation of conflict. Duke Home Care and Hospice. Provides palliative end-of-life care at home or in nursing facilities using an interdisciplinary approach. Food Bank of Eastern and Central NC. Provides food to people at risk of hunger by collecting food and delivering it to soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters and after school programs. Volunteers are needed to pack and sort warehouse inventory, assist in office, monitor agency sites, speaker's bureau, special events, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield kids' cafe. Friends of Orange County DSS. An all volunteer 501c3 organization that works with social workers to provide immediate aid to at-risk clients when other resources are unavailable. items such as car seats, cribs, and beds for foster children are always needed. Freedom House. Provides non-hospital medical detox, acute substance abuse stabilization, extended care and transitional living to promote recovery from the disease of dual diagnosis addiction (addiction plus a mental illness). Call 942-2803 or visit www.freedomhouserecovery.org.
Inter-Faith Council for Social Service. The IFC provides shelter, food, direct services, advocacy and information to people in need. Volunteers are needed to conduct a food/personal hygiene drive, as client interviewers, receptionists and greeters, day or evening volunteers at community house/Homestart, and food drivers -- all on regular or substitute basis. Lutheran Family Services. Helps refugees from around the world resettle in North Carolina. Provides case management, job development, translation, etc. Volunteers are needed to join a family support team and for translation services. Operation New Life. The program's purpose is to help all children reach their full potential, to support and assist families in Chapel Hill and Carrboro spiritually, emotionally, and academically. Orange County Literacy Council. Offers free, individualized instruction for adults who want to improve their literacy skill in reading, writing, basic math and GED preparation. Volunteers are needed to work as tutors, lead creative writing workshops, participate in the speaker's bureau, for family reading workshops, special projects, grant writing, office support, and writing and editing the newsletter. Project 5000. An annual appeal to the congregation to fill boxes with a suggested list of foods that will be distributed by the InterFaith Council.
Student Health Action Coalition. Student-run health clinic in Carrboro serving the health needs of individuals who are unable otherwise to access the healthcare system. Visit www.med.unc.edu/shac.
UNC Hospice. UNC Hospice provides support and care for people in the last phases of incurable disease so that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible. Volunteers can provide companionship and supportive listening, share their professional skills such as massage, music, photography. Women's Center. Provides financial, legal, career, adolescent, education, support and referral for women and girls in the Triangle. Volunteers are needed to work as First-response volunteers, mentors, career counselors, financial counselors, to lead workshops and community support groups, serve on committees, provide administrative support and work with special events.
