TRANSITIONAL FIVE-YEAR-OLD CLASS

The transitional five-year-old class is designed to serve a specific group of children:

1. Children who are young for their age group,  having a summer birthday, and would benefit by an additional year in a preschool environment prior to entering a full day private or public school setting.

2. Children who have experienced a 4-year-old class but are not deemed ready to attend full day kindergarten class.  Lack of readiness may be due to social-emotional immaturity, lack of confidence,  or greater interest in remaining in a setting more structured toward a hands-on learning environment through play.

3. Children who have a birthday prior to October 16 but later than the cut off date established by several private schools in our area and are therefore unable to enter kindergarten the year following their 4-year-old preschool class.

4. The cut-off date for this class is October 16th. Because of this extended date some children who would be considered very “old” four-year-olds might be appropriate for this class.

5.  Children with a fifth birthday any time during the year who, due to developmental reasons, are not ready to attend a full day kindergarten class.  Children falling into this category would need to be given specific permission for placement by the director.

If one were to compare this class with a 4-year-old class, this class schedule has: longer blocks of time for specific instruction, more teacher directed activities, and more specific skills  taught.  This class is designed to be a half  “step-up”from the 4's class to kindergarten.   It is not meant to serve as a kindergarten experience, but rather a class to insure success in kindergarten.
