PYC Trips 2012

Trips are a great way to get out of town and grow much closer to God and one another. Below you will find information on each trip we are taking during 2011. The middle school service trip to DC is for students who are in 6th-8th grade. The Montreat Youth Conference is for students who have completed 8th-12th grades.   Appalachia Service Project is for youth and adults and has a minimum age requirement of 14 years old.

April 1-4, 2012 - Middle School Service Trip to Washington DC
This trip includes outings to the National Mall, monuments, and other points of interest in the city, but focuses on poverty-related issues such as hunger, shelter, personal development, and personal care.  It will be a wonderful mix of fun and important work!  We will serve in soup kitchens, work in subsidized day cares, meet and assist elderly individuals trying to stay in their urban homes as long as possible, host a homeless or formerly homeless person for supper and conversation, sort at the Food Bank, and may even engage in conversation about/visit a site of some other world religion in that urban setting.  We stay in the basement of the Church of the Pilgrims (PC USA) on bunk beds.  They have living room and kitchen and bathroom/shower facilities as well.

Total Cost:  $160

July 15-21, 2012 --  Appalachia Service Project
This group, an outreach effort of the United Methodist Church, hosts more than 14,000 youth and adults each summer as part of their home repair/renovation ministry in central Appalachia.  We are divided into work crews of not more than seven people who work with and serve a family in need.  Even if you think you have no skills for construction, you do!  But better still, you have a heart to extend kindness to others, ears to listen to their struggle and a voice with which to offer them encouragement and carry their story back home to share with others as we continue to work against the threats of poverty in our community.  We will stay at an old school or some other facility where there are separate rooms for males and females to sleep on air mattresses and where our meals and programming in the evening will be held.  There will be a mandatory training session for participants on a Saturday morning in April (date TBA) at CANE CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH (which is also our departure site for the trip).  Leadership for the trip will be provided by Kim McNeill, PYC advisors, and UPC and CCBC adults. The two churches have worked together in this endeavor for several years and the inter-church interactions are a lot of fun.
