Inter-Faith Council for Social Service
The Inter-Faith Council for Social Service has existed in Chapel Hill for over thirty years. It began as a collaborative group of volunteers from various churches with the goal of helping those in need.
There are many opportunities for volunteers to share their time and talents at IFC. Many of UPC's members are continuing their long time commitments in activities such as serving on the boards and committees, providing office assistance, helping with special events like RSVVP and CROP Walk, working a shift at the Community House (shelter) and preparing and serving meals in the Community Kitchen.
Besides UPC's regular financial donations through the Outreach Committee, UPC provides lunch and dinner at the Community Kitchen on the third Thursday of EVERY month. Our Women's Circles are responsible for third Thursday lunches. For dinners, twice a year (spring and fall) members of the PYPs group bring pots of homemade chili for the meal and a crew of 6-8 UPC individuals are there to serve it. On the other ten months of the year, a menu is chosen and UPC members who have expressed interest are called upon to donate groceries, pre-cook food or come to help prepare and/or serve the dinner meal. Many families have been involved, but children must be 12 or older to work in the Kitchen.
