Our 2004 Peacemaking Offering
will help the Latin Patriarchate School
renovate their foreign language labs.

Each October Presbyterians around the United States collect a special Peacemaking Offering. This carries special meaning in 2004, in a nation and world at war. God call us to be peacemakers if we want to be called his children. The Peacemaking Offering supports PCUSA efforts at the national and presbytery levels, and also support peacemaking work of our congregation. This year the Outreach Committee dedicated the local portion of this year’s offering (25% or $828) to the Latin Patriarchate School. The Global Outreach Committee added a partial match of $500 for a total of $1328. This year our funds will help make concrete a dream shared by Father Aktham and the teachers at the school.

Veronique's Beginning French Class

Two students in Caroline's
Advanced French Class

In preparing their students to live in an increasingly interconnected world, the school emphasizes foreign languages. All of the students begin studying English in the first grade. For several years Marthame and Elizabeth Sanders taught the advanced English classes, and next year they are excited to have two American Mennonites coming to join the staff. As the students enter middle school, they are given the chance to add French as well. Currently, two young Frenchwomen, Veronique Allemon and Caroline Rouvillain, are teachers at the school, providing French lessons from native speakers. Father Aktham and his teachers have dreamed of a modernized language lab, with computer-assisted equipment that allows students and teachers to work through exercises, helping compensate for the fact that native English and French speakers are few and far between in that part of the world.
